GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs routine and complex maintenance and repairs on rail vehicles and vehicle systems including mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical components requiring precision measurements and demanding dimension fit. Responsible for assigned machine work related to preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of rail vehicles, systems, and components.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Diagnoses typical or unusual defects in most systems and components including but not limited to: trucks, draft gear and couplers, wheel and axle assemblies, suspension system, mechanical drive trains, pneumatic systems, doors/ controls, and braking systems.
  2. Inspects vehicles using portable vehicle system diagnostic equipment, pressure gauges to determine the necessary repairs and renewals of mechanical systems and components.
  3. Determines extent of repairs, adjustments, calibrations, lubrication and cleaning, and replacements on the vehicle especially wheel and axle assembly including wheel truing, re-profiling, gauging of tires, wheel boring and wheel pressing. Performs repair and rebuilding of vehicle-borne compressors.
  4. Performs routine and complex tests, troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance services, unit and assembly replacements of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components requiring precision measurements and demanding dimension/finish procedures.
  5. Calibrates measuring tools and instruments. Performs mechanical checks on wheel and axle components and subassemblies including bearings according to respective Association of American Railroads (AAR) specifications.
  6. Performs duties according to OEM and DARTs specifications, policies and procedures. Records required maintenance activity in DART?s Asset Maintenance System including component log documentation, test and installation records, and work orders.
  7. Proficiently utilizes measuring tools to layout steel stock according to blueprints, templates and fabricates parts to drawings or technical specifications.
  8. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repair of shop equipment such as wheel truing machine, portable car jacks, truck and body lifts, wheel press, wheel borer, power shear, etc.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university or certification from an accredited technical program in Machinist Technology, Mechanical Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent combination of education/experience in piping and tube bending and cutting tools, micrometers. Component cleaning equipment, steam, mechanical and mineral spirit units, vertical table, lathes, wheel truing machine and car progression system, wheel press, wheel borer, saw, planer, shaper, radial and other drills, surface grinders, CNC machining centers, automatic screw machines, welding equipment and gas cutting torch.
  2. Must pass a technical test.
  3. Must obtain and maintain certification in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to this position.
  4. Operates DART non-revenue vehicles as required.
  5. Must have a valid Drivers License class C, and be able to obtain a Texas class C within 90 days of employment; no DWI/DUI conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty six (36) consecutive months on driving record in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  6. Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (medical) examination, which includes a drug screen in order to operate DART revenue and non-revenue vehicles; incumbents are subject to the federal testing regulations of safety sensitive positions, which include random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  7. Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  8. Ability to quickly comprehend and process technically complex concepts; can learn new skills and knowledge through E-Learning or class room instruction; is good at learning new industry, company or technical knowledge.
  9. Ability to use logic to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; can see hidden problems; looks beyond the obvious and does not stop at the first answers.
  10. Must be able to orally communicate in an effective manner with the public, co-workers, supervisors and managers to ensure efficient operations; to promote safety; and to respond to emergencies. Must also be able to read and comprehend a variety of work related/required technical manuals, safety rules and regulations.
  11. Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact effectively with a diverse customer population while under pressure.
  12. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, nights, holidays, weekends, and short notice availability. May be required to travel to multiple work locations.
  13. Ability to lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds such as tools, equipment, and parts; must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces on the vehicle, tunnel, and aerial structures.

Reports to Mgr Fleet Services *

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
