GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for assigned work of preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of rail vehicles, systems, and components for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Rail Maintenance Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform technician level diagnosis of Light Rail vehicle malfunctions, determine the root cause, and make necessary repairs to Light Rail vehicle systems, including propulsion, traction motors, brakes, air compressors, couplers, doors, HVAC, auxiliary power, and all other related electromechanical components.
  2. Perform preventative maintenance inspections and repairs, remove and replace malfunctioning vehicle components.
  3. Perform Light Rail Vehicle diagnosis within the service area main line, in compliance with all safety and established main line procedures, during emergency vehicle recovery situations.
  4. Perform Light Rail vehicle re-railing
  5. Promote and comply with established safety, training, and quality assurance programs.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university or certification from an accredited technical program in Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology, or equivalent combination of education/experience in preventative and corrective maintenance as it relates to electronics.
  2. Must pass a technical test.
  3. Must obtain and maintain certification in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to this position.
  4. Must successfully complete LRV/streetcar vendor training.
  5. Must be able to orally communicate in an effective manner with the public, co-workers, supervisors and managers to ensure efficient operations; to promote safety; and to respond to emergencies. Must also be able to read and comprehend a variety of work related/required technical manuals, safety rules and regulations.
  6. Must have a valid Drivers License class C, and be able to obtain a Texas class A, B, or C within 90 days of employment; no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) consecutive months in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  7. Must pass a physical (medical) examination; Incumbents are subject to the federal testing regulations of safety sensitive positions, which include random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  8. Must have good oral and written communication skills with the ability to write clearly in a variety of communication styles and settings. Must be able to accurately restate or record incidents.
  9. Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  10. Ability to pick up technical things quickly; can learn new skills and knowledge through E-Learning or class room instruction; is good at learning new industry, company or technical knowledge.
  11. Ability to use logic to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; can see hidden problems; looks beyond the obvious and does not stop at the first answers.
  12. Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact effectively with a diverse customer population while under pressure.
  13. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, nights, holidays, weekends, and short notice availability. May be required to travel to multiple work locations.
  14. Ability to lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds such as tools, equipment, and parts; must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces on the vehicle, tunnel, and aerial structures.
  15. Personal computer (PC); software applications such as Windows, word processing, spreadsheet, database; typical office equipment such as copier, calculator, typewriter, facsimile, etc.
  16. Operates DART non-revenue vehicles as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Mgr Rail Fleet Maintenance *

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
