GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs supervisory duties related to developing and implementing instruction and classroom training initiatives for all Transportation Department personnel involved in Bus Operations. Develops and conducts training classes for other Departments as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for, recommends and implements training programs consistent with agency strategic goals and objectives, policies, and standard operating procedures to include modifying lesson plans in accordance with changes.
  2. Conducts, evaluates, instructs, monitors and supervises the training of students during their training course.
  3. Provides on-going training for Bus Operators as needed or required.
  4. Creates training reports as requested.
  5. Schedules, oversees and evaluates CDL, refresher, route, new equipment, customer service, collision avoidance, return-to-work, BOSS, and Supervisor training on an as needed basis.
  6. Accurately captures and records information regarding training class completion, training hours for payroll purposes and student operator corrective or disciplinary action in Trapeze Ops.
  7. Tracks and monitors students progress after the completion of training programs. Conducts ride checks and mentors Operators through their probationary period. Participates with Division Management staff and Safety Specialist in probationary reviews.
  8. Establishes criteria and monitors performance and reports of Bus Operator/Instructors and makes appropriate recommendations.
  9. Responsible for maintaining applicable certifications for self and others.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned (e.g., attends Route Monitoring Task Force meetings, participates in Division Level Measurement problem solving teams, etc.).

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in field of expertise (i.e. Business Administration, Public Administration, Transportation, Human Resources, Planning, Safety, Curriculum Development or other technical fields applicable to DART Transportation).
  2. Three (3) years transit operations or related experience to include at least one (1) year as a bus or rail operator or station monitor and a combination of experience working in positions requiring extensive customer interactions.
  3. Must have or obtain a National Safety Council and Operation Life Saver certification within 180 days upon employment.
  4. Must pass a technical test with a score of 70% or higher.
  5. Ability to work variable shifts and work hours (i.e. early morning, late night or weekend shifts).
  6. Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examination prior to hire and periodically as a condition of continued employment. Applicants and employees in these designated safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT/FTA regulations which include DOT preemployment drug testing and random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  7. Valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) to include passenger endorsement. No Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last 60 consecutive months; not more than one (1) on driving record. No more than three (3) moving violation convictions within the last 36 months.
  8. Proficient using PC and software applications (i.e. MS Word, MS Power Point, MS Excel, Trapeze, etc.) and two-way communications equipment.
  9. Ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles.
  10. Ability to make good decisions based upon a mixture of analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment.
  11. Ability to create a climate in which people want to do their best; can motivate many kinds of direct reports and team or project members.
  12. Ability to practice attentive and active listening.
  13. Ability to read situations quickly; can hammer out tough agreements and settle disputes.
  14. Ability to use rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while operating vehicles, conducting training activities in the field, or supervising Roadeo activities, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
