GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs assigned work relative to maintenance, repair, and inspection of motor vehicles for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Fleet Services Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs variety of major repairs to engines, transmissions, and accessories, as well as air conditioning, heating, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  2. Overhauls major components such as engine, transmission, and differentials.
  3. Rebuilds other components such as engine accessories and vehicle support systems.
  4. Performs make-ready of new vehicles and preventive maintenance of revenue vehicles as required.
  5. Changes tires, fuels, and/or cleans/services vehicles as required.
  6. Makes service calls as required; operate vehicles if necessary.
  7. Promotes established safety, training, and quality assurance programs.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university or certification from an accredited technical program in Automotive/Diesel Mechanics Technology, or equivalent combination of education/experience.
  2. Must pass a technical test.
  3. Must obtain and maintain certification(s) in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.
  4. Must be able to communicate in a clear and concise manner and read and comprehend a variety of technical manuals and safety regulations.
  5. Must have a valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) class B with Passenger Endorsement, no DWI/DUI conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) consecutive months on driving record in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles. Must obtain CDL within ninety (90) days upon hire.
  6. Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (medical) examination, which includes a drug screen in order to operate DART revenue and non-revenue vehicles; incumbents are subject to the federal testing regulations of safety sensitive positions, which include random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  7. Operates DART non-revenue vehicles as required. Operates DART multi-axle vehicles, trucks, and service equipment as required.
  8. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, nights, holidays, weekends, and short notice availability. May be required to travel to multiple work locations.
  9. Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  10. Ability to quickly comprehend and process technically complex concepts; can learn new skills and knowledge through E-Learning or class room instruction; is good at learning new industry, company or technical knowledge.
  11. Ability to use logic to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; can see hidden problems; looks beyond the obvious and does not stop at the first answers.
  12. Must be able to orally communicate in an effective manner with the public, co-workers, supervisors and managers to ensure efficient operations; to promote safety; and to respond to emergencies. Must also be able to read and comprehend a variety of work related/required technical manuals, safety rules and regulations.
  13. Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact effectively with a diverse customer population while under pressure.
  14. Ability to lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds such as tools, equipment, and parts; must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces on the vehicle, tunnel, and aerial structures.

Reports to Mgr Fleet Services-Central Sup*

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
