GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs assigned work relative to structural repair/refurbishment of light rail vehicles for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Fleet Services Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Repair LRV vehicles damaged in accidents to include working with sheet metal, structural steel and other materials.
  2. Use a variety of metalwork machines and tools to fabricate structural posts, flooring and sub-flooring, roof panels and roof supports, straightening and fabrication of body panels, collision posts, pneumatic piping.
  3. Prepare vehicles for painting to include body fillers, sanding, etc., and paint vehicles to DART specifications and approved configuration.
  4. Operate and maintain equipment utilized for paint application and paint vehicles as needed or as scheduled.
  5. Replace interior and under car wiring to termination point and equipment and components as required.
  6. Perform interior and exterior body inspection and/or polish LRVs as needed or as scheduled.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university or certification from an accredited technical program in Structural Body Repair Technology.
  2. Must pass a technical test.
  3. Must obtain and maintain certification in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to this position.
  4. Operates DART non-revenue vehicles as required.
  5. Must have a valid Drivers License class C, and be able to obtain a Texas class C within 90 days of employment; no DWI/DUI conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty six (36) consecutive months on driving record in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  6. Must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical (medical) examination, which includes a drug screen in order to operate DART revenue and non-revenue vehicles; incumbents are subject to the federal testing regulations of safety sensitive positions, which include random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. May be subject to medical surveillance examinations and blood tests for hexavalent chromium, lead and zinc protoporphyrin.
  7. Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  8. Ability to quickly comprehend and process technically complex concepts; can learn new skills and knowledge through E-Learning or class room instruction; is good at learning new industry, company or technical knowledge.
  9. Ability to use logic to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; can see hidden problems; looks beyond the obvious and does not stop at the first answers.
  10. Must be able to orally communicate in an effective manner with the public, co-workers, supervisors and managers to ensure efficient operations; to promote safety; and to respond to emergencies. Must also be able to read and comprehend a variety of work related/required technical manuals, safety rules and regulations.
  11. Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact effectively with a diverse customer population while under pressure.
  12. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, nights, holidays, weekends, and short notice availability. May be required to travel to multiple work locations.
  13. Ability to lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds such as tools, equipment, and parts; must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces on the vehicle, tunnel, and aerial structures.

Reports to Mgr Rail Fleet Maintenance *

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
