GENERAL SUMMARY:
Performs assigned work relative to rebuilds, repair, and inspection of Light Rail Vehicle systems and related components for the Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART) Fleet Services Division..

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs rebuilds and repairs to Light Rail Vehicle systems such as; propulsion, brakes, trucks, doors, couplers, pantographs, HVAC, low voltage power supply, 12-volt power supply, auxiliary electric, motor alternator, battery, auxiliary equipment, lighting, cab equipment, cab heater/defroster, car body & articulation, seats, destination signs, PA/IC and accessories, as well as air conditioning, heating, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  2. Performs tear down of LRV trucks, and truck related equipment.
  3. Overhauls systems and sub-systems of the vehicle such as brake actuators, valves, air conditioning compressors, air supply compressors, pantographs, couplers, and gearboxes.
  4. Promotes established safety, training, and quality assurance programs.
  5. Ensure the work area is clean.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university or certification from an accredited technical program in electrical, electronic or equivalent combination of education/experience in a rail/bus equipment shop or related heavy electro-mechanical maintenance area.
  2. Must pass a technical test.
  3. Must obtain and maintain certification(s) in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.
  4. Must be able to communicate in a clear and concise manner and read and comprehend a variety of technical manuals and safety regulations.
  5. Must have a valid Drivers License class C, and can obtain a Texas class A, B, or C within 90 days of employment; no DWI/DUI conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than three (3) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) consecutive months on driving record to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  6. Applicants and employees in these designated safety-sensitive positions are subject to DOT/FTA regulations which include DOT preemployment drug testing and random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  7. Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  8. Ability to pick up technical things quickly; can learn new skills and knowledge through E-Learning or class room instruction; is good at learning new industry, company or technical knowledge.
  9. Ability to use logic to solve difficult problems with effective solutions; can see hidden problems; looks beyond the obvious and does not stop at the first answers.
  10. Must have excellent customer service skills and can interact effectively with a diverse customer population while under pressure.
  11. Personal computer (PC); software applications such as Windows, word processing, spreadsheet, database; typical office equipment such as copier, calculator, typewriter, facsimile, etc.
  12. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, nights, holidays, weekends, and short notice availability. May be required to travel to multiple work locations.
  13. Ability to lift objects weighing up to seventy (70) pounds such as tools, equipment, and parts; must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces on the vehicle, tunnel, and aerial structures.
  14. Operates DART non-revenue vehicles as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Mgr Rail Fleet Maintenance *

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
