GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for assigned work of preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of rail vehicles, systems, and components for the Dallas Area Rapid Transits (DART) Rail Maintenance Division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists Supervisor with work task assignments; verify daily time records; assist with mechanic training.
  2. Performs Fill-In Supervisor duties as requested by the Management team or designee.
  3. Performs rebuilds and repairs to Light Rail Vehicle systems such as; propulsion, brakes, trucks, doors, couplers, pantographs, HVAC, low voltage power supply, 12-volt power supply, auxiliary electric, motor alternator, battery, auxiliary equipment, lighting, cab equipment, cab heater/defroster, car body & articulation, seats, destination signs, PA/IC and accessories, as well as air conditioning, heating, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  4. Performs tear down of LRV trucks, and truck related equipment
  5. Overhaul systems and sub-systems of the vehicle such as brake actuators, valves, air conditioning compressors, air supply compressors, pantographs, couplers, and gearboxes.
  6. Perform preventative maintenance of revenue vehicles as scheduled.
  7. Make service calls as required; operate DART vehicles if necessary.
  8. Promote established safety, training, and quality assurance programs.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college or university or certification from an accredited technical program in Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology, plus one (1) year experience in related environment.
  2. One (1) year experience in Electronics Technology, Mechanical Technology, or related environment.
  3. Must pass a technical test.
  4. Must obtain and maintain certification in compliance with all state and federal regulations applicable to this position.
  5. Must successfully complete LRV/streetcar vendor training.
  6. Must have a valid Class C Drivers License, and be able to obtain a Texas class A within 90 days of employment; no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI/DUI on driving record, and not more than two (2) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) consecutive months in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  7. Must pass a physical (medical) examination; Incumbents are subject to the federal testing regulations of safety sensitive positions, which include random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
  8. Proficiency with personal computer (PC), software applications to include MS Office (Word, Excel, Access).
  9. Must work in a safe manner and constant state of alertness.
  10. Ability to promote a positive and inclusive work culture.
  11. Ability to have the functional and technical knowledge and skills to do the job at a high level of accomplishment.
  12. Ability to make decisions in the absence of guidance from others, and to plan and carry out work assignments in situations where the procedures have been established.
  13. Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact effectively with a diverse customer population while under pressure
  14. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently.
  15. Must be able to orally communicate in an effective manner with the public, co-workers, supervisors and managers to ensure efficient operations; to promote safety; and to respond to emergencies. Must also be able to read and comprehend a variety of work related/required technical manuals, safety rules and regulations.
  16. Ability to find solutions to mechanical and technical problems.
  17. Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours, nights, holidays, weekends, and short notice availability. May be required to travel to multiple work locations.
  18. Ability to be mobile and occasionally 70% - 80% of the work time. Lift objects weighing up to seventy - (70) pounds such as tools, equipment and parts. Must be able to work in crowded and tight spaces.
  19. Ability to use standard devices weighing up to 50lbs such as hand tools, portable shop test equipment for testing and other required equipment in order to perform your job functions.

Reports to Mgr Rail Fleet Maintenance *

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
