GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for the criminal case filings for the department and for assisting with the Evidence and Property room to ensure compliance with Texas Best Standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Responsible for the criminal case filings for the department and for assisting with the duties and responsibilities of the evidence and property management function when needed.
  2. Prepares and reviews documents for the filing of criminal cases with the District Attorney.
  3. Identifies, locates, gathers, and reviews evidence used in criminal cases.
  4. Contacts witnesses for criminal cases as necessary.
  5. Prepares affidavits for search warrants.
  6. Arranges laboratory testing of all controlled substances used as evidence in criminal cases.
  7. Submits required documentation to the Texas Department of Public Safety for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) charges.
  8. Trains staff on reporting writing, evidence procedures, and other related information.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Public Administration or related field.
  2. Two (2) years law enforcement or legal experience such as paralegal, court clerk, police officer; knowledge of Texas Rules of Criminal Procedure and Texas Criminal Court System.
  3. Valid Texas Class A, B, or C drivers license, no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI on driving record, and not more than three (3) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) consecutive months on driving record in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  4. Ability to work variable shifts and days, and to be available for work on short notice.
  5. Ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles.
  6. Ability to be dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers. Acts with customer in mind.
  7. Ability to make rationale decisions based on a mixture of analysis, experience, and judgment.
  8. Ability to know how businesses work; knowledgeable in current and possible future policies, practices, trends, technology and information affecting DART Police business and organization.
  9. Ability to marshal resources to get things done. Can handle multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal. Able to use resources effectively and efficiently.
  10. Ability to use rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions.
  11. Ability to demonstrate a fiduciary obligation to section, division, department, and DART in handling materials and information of a confidential nature.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to DART Police Sergeant *

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting DART's operating facilities, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
