GENERAL SUMMARY:
In the role of System Engineer, the incumbent will manage and provide support for infrastructure systems including servers, storage, backups, data center equipment and related components. The responsibilities include installing equipment, configuring and securing servers/applications, system monitoring, and documenting designs according to industry best practices. The systems engineer will be responsible consulting, troubleshooting and supporting Infrastructure in data center environments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provides Tier 1 support and consulting for System Engineering. Addresses and resolves technical issues with internal clients and external customers, including assisting with problems escalated from the Service Desk.
  2. Manages physical data center resources including A/C, chillers, in-row coolers, racks, UPS, electrical service, etc.
  3. Provides basic maintenance and support of physical and virtual (VM, VDI) systems. Configure and provision servers and storage to Agency standards and industry best practices.
  4. Recovers, reloads, and restores files, server volumes, and databases from backups.
  5. Identify and resolve hardware/software interface and interoperability problems.
  6. Builds, configures and troubleshoots server operating systems.
  7. Performs basic technical feasibility and evaluation of proposed product solutions to ensure business requirements, performance, capacity, and security objectives.
  8. Proactively maintains infrastructure with current firmware, updates, and patching.
  9. Provides resource utilization, including base-lining utilization of server resources (CPU, memory, storage space, backup capacity).
  10. Develops and maintains accurate system documentation, reports and disaster recovery plans. Adheres to ITIL guidelines and industry best practices.
  11. Participates in scheduled change management and participates in incident management as needed. Documents changes and actions in change management system, service management system and CMDB.
  12. Provides 5-star customer service and meet Agency service level agreements (SLA).
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Note: An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the below stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

  1. Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related field.
  2. Three (3) years functional experience in system engineering, application administration or other related field.
  3. A current Microsoft Infrastructure, VMware, Enterprise Storage or UNIX/Linux certification preferred.
  4. Basic knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems.
  5. Basic understanding of back office software, services and protocols including: VMWare, Vsphere, Veeam, Citrix, WhatsUp Gold, certificates, DNS, DHCP, ADFS, Active Directory, Encryption, Authentication, CIFS/NFS/SMB, SSH, SCP, FTP, IP addressing, etc.
  6. Basic PowerShell scripting abilities for automating system administrative duties and data workflow processes.
  7. Must be able to perform work from remote locations as needed.
  8. Must be able to work variable hours, to include emergency response to outages.
  9. Must be able to work in an on-call rotation.
  10. Must maintain all certification(s) required for this position.
  11. Valid Texas Class A, B, or C drivers license, no Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction within the last sixty (60) consecutive months, not more than one (1) DWI on driving record, and not more than three (3) convictions of moving violations within the last thirty-six (36) months in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles or drive in the course and scope of job.
  12. Pass a physical (medical) examination that includes a drug screen in order to operate DART non-revenue vehicles.
  13. Proficiency of PC software applications to include Microsoft Office or other related software applications.
  14. Ability to pick up on technical things quickly. Can learn new skills and knowledge. Is good at learning new industry, company, product, or technical knowledge. Does well in technical courses and seminars.
  15. Ability to be dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers. Gets first-hand customer information and uses it for improvements in products and services. Acts with customers in mind. Establishes and maintains effective relationships with customers and gains their trust and respect.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
Reports to Senior Manager-Client Services*

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in an environment where there is minimum exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting DART's operating facilities, assuming incumbent is observing all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and using all protective clothing and devices provided.
